Yup...there's some smaller lakes in that area as well as a really cool old gold mine that you can get into. "Dead horse Creek" gold mine. Spend some time looking over Google Earth and you'll find your way. Shelton lake is also a good find with some excellent off the grid camping.
You could spend days exploring extension and it's perfect for your rig.
There's old mine shafts to find, there's a giant crack in the earth called "The Abys" that's hidden in there among other things. It's a great area to start.
There is some more difficult terrain up towards Barsby Lake and if you look hard enough there are roads/trails that will put you onto the 142 which is the mainline connecting Nanoose and Nanaimo with all sorts of fun along the way.
Go to a gas station and find yourself a "Back roads map book" it's a great resource, or if you have an Android phone or Tablet there are many GPS apps that can be run offline. I personally use "Back Country Navigator Pro" and it will at the very least keep you from getting lost.
Welcome aboard, I'm out almost every Sunday in Nanaimo, I try and get out early 9ish a.m.
If you ever want to join just send me a P.M. and I'll let you know where to meet.
I'm not sure if I'll get out next Sunday as I'm working on building a new front bumper after an accident, but the following weekend I'll be back atter.
