Welcome Hillbilly, the sites been a little quiet over the past month or so but a lot of us are fixing our rigs from the summer months. Keep checking back as most of us post up a time and date when we go out. Again welcome to the site.
Couple reasons why actually, on the way out of the bush I busted my exhaust off at the inlet side of the Cat. so it was extremely loud (heat score), I had my daily driver plates on the jeep I did not have any insurance at the time (Big fine). I just felt it was a "smarter" decision to call the hook, otherwise I would have just removed my wheel spacers. It's a good thing I have friends in the tow business and they gave me a great deal.
I had just stopped where gravel meats pavement, I didn't get 30 yards before the wheel came off, it was very confusing up until the tire came out of the fender like you said, but lucky for me I was only doing 25-30KMH and by the time the tire fell out of the fender it wasn't going very fast so it didn't make it past the ditch on the other side of the road.

Some where on the trail I lost all my wheel nuts, lucky for me the wheel didn't fall off until I hit pavement.
