theshanergy's 2022 Surron X

Figured I'd start a build thread and random picture dump for my Sur Ron Light Bee X. The Sur Ron is an electric motorcycle / e-moto, but really handles more like a heavy downhill mountain bike with power.

As with all of my vehicles this one wasn't stock for long. So far I've added an EBMX 72v 42ah battery and ASI BAC8000 controller, as well as a bash guard for the motor, new pegs, and a small riser bar. I also plan to do more upgrades in the future including bigger wheels/tires, though I haven't decided on the exact setup yet.

The bike in its current form absolutely rips and gets me pretty much everywhere I want to go. Range is great so far. I just got back from a ~45km ride with around 1k ft elevation gain over 3.5 hours, through a mixture of tight single and fast double track and the battery still had 40% when I got home. I think you could safely get 70-80km of throttle heavy riding on the setup as-is though I haven't tested it to dead yet. I get tired before the bike does.

The awesome thing about this bike and one of the main reasons I got it is that it is absolutely stealth and offers a perfect middle ground between mountain biking and dirtbiking. It is small, light (~100lbs) and nimble, yet extremely powerful and keeps up with much bigger gas bikes even in the straights. I can ride right out of my garage, down the road, and into the backcountry without needing a trailer, gas, etc. I can go wherever I want and nobody bats an eye, and most importantly, gates cannot stop me. I really think this is the future of riding, at least it is for me.

I'll update the thread with more as I do some more riding. If anyone else in the Alberni Valley or on the Island has one and sees this, I'm looking for riding buddies!

Parts update - swapped my front forks for some Fox 40s, as well as swapped out a Bridgestone Battlecross X30 front tire, and Maxxis Maxxcross IT rear tire. Running standard innertubes for now but I think I'm going to go tubeless at some point. The new tires have improved traction considerably and the fork is much more tunable and should be longer lasting.

Oh and I swapped back to the straight bars and think I actually prefer them even though everyone seems to run risers on this bike.

Here are some shots of the new setup overlooking Port Alberni from the south.

Did an excellent ride yesterday up Wesley Ridge from Whiskey Creek. The trail gains some nice elevation with several killer view points overlooking the ocean to the north, Cameron Lake to the south, and Horne Lake to the west. The trail was a mixture of double and single track with some steep technical climbs and tight tree sections in between. Lots of rocks and roots and the Sur Ron ate it all up. Overall distance was around 40km, with ~1200m elevation gain. Made it back with 30% battery remaining which was surprising given the elevation gain and that we were on the trails for over 6 hours. Also I was riding with some big gas bikes on this one and the Sur Ron was able to hang no problem. Really happy with how the bike is performing overall.

Found some cool new singletrack and interesting terrain near Cameron river in Port Alberni. The entire Cameron river valley is cool actually, lots of huge cliffs and boulders and interesting geography.

Wow this thing is actually really sick, I’ve been seeing videos of them and always said a fox 40 would be rad on one. Good to see it actually works!

Did a little experimental backpack camping from the bike last night - worked pretty well!

Had an awesome ride yesterday to the summit of Mt. Irwin, with views of Port Alberni. The climb was 1,345 meters in elevation with some hard enduro at the top.

I also swapped to the new Tusk Ground Wire eMoto tire on the rear and even though it has a lot less sidewall it's been performing great. I'd say it's my favorite tire so far.

This bike always puts a smile on my face. Probably the most enjoyment I get from any of my toys.
