( and like fatty said, google earth. Its amazing. As far as I know though, not as easy to use offline for mobile offroad usage as the other app i mentioned.!
yep thats a very popular book here on this forum and for everyone who explores on the island, definitely worth a copy! I recommend getting a hardcopy in most book stores they sell them. Gotta keep in mind that its not 100% accurate, ive seen gate signs on that book, and in real life there was no gate and vice versa. Things change all the time and its tough for them to keep up with all the little changes, but! Its definitely an excellent tool.
As for an app, I use backcountry navigator. It has a few map sources for canada, and one of them ( cant remember which, theres only like 5 total ) has excellent data on it for navigation offroad. It has some stuff the mapbook doesnt have, and the mapbook has some stuff it doesnt have, so I use both and im golden. Also, keep in mind for offroad navigation, you will need a satellite signal, which phones and tablets do receive, but it wont always be perfect. I purchased a small bluetooth satellite receiver that connects with american and russian satellites, and its worked flawlessly. I map everywhere I go, and leave notes on things I like!
yea agreed shane, its easy to point fingers at us saying we destroy it and its bad...when in reality compared to what they do, we leave a very small footprint ( besides the idiots who dump garbage everywhere)
haha brandon the second I saw your profile pic, in my head I was like THAT GUY! ( the only dude I know who climbed that insane rock climb at oliphant, so far :P ) yea I scour the net too to try to find all I can, and I map everywhere I go with my onboard gps/mapping setup. Were actually going back to shawnigan area on monday ( most likely) theres alot more to see there!
currently as far as I know theres no access to keys, unless you know someone that works for logging and has them and stuff. Theres no permit you can get either ( I think?) ( I havent heard of any) but if theres a gate, technically that means stay out. But, I know areas that have old gates that are still locked from a long time ago, with obvious bypasses right beside them, and no one cares, and I know gates ( like the watershed areas, which are run by CRD) that if you bypass those and get caught...its not going to be a good day
