Handheld/Vehicle mounted GPS Devices

Hey there, I’m looking into getting some kind of GPS device, either vehicle mounted or handheld, and I’m just wondering if anyone has any recommendations.
I know Garmin is probably my best bet because I’ve heard some really good reviews about all their products.
Thank you

I’ve had the best luck with the Gaia app on my phone. Get a dedicated tablet if you don’t want to use your phone maybe. But it’s a solid app, reasonable subscription fee, and tons of different map layers that all get updated frequently.

For a dedicated off-road GPS device, the cost was just not worth it to me. They’re pretty specialized, and don’t do much more than a tablet and app will do.

I second Gaia, you can record, save, and share routes in it too.

Ok sounds good, I’ll look into it. I’ll probably get a second device so it’s separate from my phone, plus I like bigger screens

That's a good way to go, maybe if Shane sees this he can explain his setup. He runs a tablet and I think downloads the maps/cache to offline. I'm not tech savvy so maybe that's not completely accurate.

That's what I do. You have to download sections of the Gaia maps in advance. So I've downloaded the entire island, but if I go to the mainland I have to remeber to downoad the area in advance.

Maps.me is a good backup for totally offline maps. You can download the whole country in advance and it doesn't take up too much storage.

Yeah I might have to do something like that. I have an iPad mini but it’s probably too old to run the app :/

Yeah that seems like the best way to go about it.

What do you guys think of the Garmin Overlander?

Sorry, don’t know anything about it! I haven’t had a Garmin in many years, and it was just a basic on-road one.
