Nanaimo Sunday, Monday, Tuesday

Hi Everyone,

Am looking to do a small camping / film trip out to Nanaimo with two friends fron Victoria, with the primary goal of seeing some coal mine sites (active or discontinued). I know there are few entrances around town, but was manily looking for ones "in the woods" with potentially a nice view. I know there are lots of gates in the area, and was hoping upon someones guidance this could potentially be avoided to save some time, as well as potentially some good wheeling (I don't have lockers/sliders, so nothing too crazy or tight as I have a DCLB tacoma, but am okay with some pin-striping)

I can provide beers & Timmies for the help and Im sure we can get some sweet shots of your rig (ChristianTisdale.com).

Would be leaving Vic Sunday, Sept. 20 @ like 10AM.

I'm looking on backroad map books, google maps, and a few websites, to try and find some spots, but a local guide with someone who knows the area well would be best:

Thanks

Matt

I know of 3-4 mine shaft entrances in the area...problem is I'm not sure I can get a full size to them and trying to explain would be even harder

You've got some nice shots on your site! If you ever need a tour guide around the Cowichan area let me know - we could use some high quality truck shots for the homepage.

If you're looking for old mines that you can still get into you're not gonna have much luck, everything has had the entrances filled. There are only two mines that I know of that can still be somewhat accessed. 1 is a coal mine and you can only get into it about 20-25 feet, after that it's filled with water. Another is Dead horse creek gold mine up near second lake. which you can still get into quite far. Wolf mountain coal mine you can see a small opening, but would require some digging to get into. Rumour has it a lot of the old mining machines were left in there when the entrance was filled.
Credit to Island Nut for the pics.
