Port Hardy to Cape Scott

Hey all,
Planning a drive to San Josef Bay in April '19. Either coming from Port Hardy or Coal Harbour.
How is the road there? Is it a heavy active logging road?

I am new to driving logging roads so don't know if I should risk it since I'll be going solo & in a rental.
I have heard horror stories of trucks barreling down those roads and want to know as much possible before making a decision on going.

Any advice welcome -- also if there are ALT ways to get there for a day trip. Shuttles or companies?

Thanks!

I would worry more about getting a flat tire. Some rental vehicles will have a spare tire but they have removed the jack and tire iron needed to change the tire. Liability reasons?

If you do go, make sure you have food and water to last you a couple weeks. Don't expect to have cell phone reception either.

Also know that insurance doesn't cover you on logging roads and it can be very difficult and expensive to get a tow on logging roads.

I agree with FX4 its sounds like flats are a common thing. You can check out this site as it has some road conditions from last year and will give
you a feel for what your up against. You could contact them as the might be able to give a idea of the road condition. https://www.coveadventuretours.com/cape-scott-road-conditions

Thanks for the feedback - that link is what has made me do a little more research before going. I would love to do the tour out of Port Hardy - but since I am travelling solo it's a 2 person min and I can't guarantee a group will be going out when I'm there.
So I will see what happens when I get there and if not this time - next!

:)

No problem
You could also put a post in this forum under trips I believe it is saying your going there at a certain
time and mabee some else is willing to join or is going that way and looking for a second party like you are.
Let us know how it goes .

The road to San Josef from Port Hardy can be driven in any vehicle. You will encounter many sedans, compacts, campers, and mini vans on that road in the summer. It is gravel, but is a public road, not an industrial road, so anyone is allowed to drive it and will be covered by insurance. The biggest issue is it sees a lot of passenger car traffic, so is heavily potholed if not recently graded, so take your time. It is a busy road, so if you were to break down, someone will be along, typically within 10 minutes, so you at not out of reach of help.
