Been searching for some, closer to Victoria, off-road spots in the south Island ( south of Duncan ). Ended up around Shawnigan and it was a gated bonanza, any road that wasn't locked/gated was marked private. I tried a couple of those private off-roads and was chased down by nearby homeowners like a criminal.
Couple questions:
Are these 'private' roads illegal to pass through? ( private signs do not seem government issued )
Where are the spots south of Duncan if any? please pm me any if you would like to share! The only one I've seen publicly posted is Oliphant, Aikman entrance is gated and the serious coffee route seems always dug up.

Near Duncan there is mt sicker and mt Prevost, hillcrest and hill 60 off of the lake cowichan highway, lots to explore. Nothing really closer to Victoria except sooke, and if you thought Shawnigan was a gate-fest...
Hear ya on Sooke, I've been to Jordan River, Hill 60 and Cowichan, too bad there's nothing closer. Will checkout Mt. Sicker one of these days, thanks!
Awesome place to check out. Most poeple I know do the hill 60 mt sicker/prevost loop. As said lots too explore I'm usually out there on a Saturday. I've never been to sooke but been told not to bother...Good luck!
