Tire poke/wheel offset - looking for input

Just about to order a new set of wheels for my 5th gen 4runner and wanted a little bit of tire poke but not so much that I'm a moving target for police or CVSE.

I'll be running BFG K02 265/70/17 and am looking at wheels with 17/8.5 and a -18 offset/4.0 backspace.

Will that be too much tire poke?

Alternatively other wheel specs I was looking at incase the -18 offset was too much was 17/8.5 and a 0 offset/4.7 backspace.

Thanks guys

Hey Jared, if you don’t get the info you need here, try on https://www.toyota-4runner.org/. There’s probably already posts there about this, and if not, someone there will definitely know. That place has been my saviour since getting my first T4R.

Thanks Alex, but yeah, already been through all the forums with probably over a hundred pages worth of threads.

I'm not concerned about anyone's style opinions, I'm concerned about the legality. I just don't want to be a target for tickets.

Legally speaking, the full tread width of a tire has to be covered by mud flaps/guards. BUT lots of folks run their rigs with a bit of tire poke, some more than others and some of those folks get tickets and vehicle inspections, some don't.

I'm trying to gauge how much tire poke I can get away with before a cop might consider it obnoxious enough to ticket me and send me for a VI.

Oh, I gotcha. I don't know much about that stuff, but I have heard that tire poke is the main thing you'll get a VI for, more than bumpers or anything else.

My tires are well within my fenders, and I like it that way. I don't want the hassle of VIs on my daily driver.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I'm too old to be driving a moving vehicle inspection with the potential for getting dinged by every ex high school jock in a car with flashing lights.

By the way, I've found some cool spots since we last went wheeling together, would love to go for another adventure and show you sometime!

Hah! Exactly.

Yeah man. I'm hoping to get out as much as I can over the holiday break. I'm off all week!

My tires poke 1 inch (I think) never had a problem? I'll take a pic in the daylight. May also depend on how many other mods you have that attract the attention too.

Depends on the cop and area, my daily driver has half the tire sticking out which is about 6 inches and has no issues so far. Main thing is don’t have a lot of other reasons for them to pull you over.
And I’ve also heard keeping the vehicle clean helps vs covered in mud

thanks for the pic! I decided to go with a 0 offset with 4.7" backspace. should stay within the top of the fender, or just barely poking out, with the rest of the wheel well still exposing enough of the tire to give the illusion of more poke. I really wanted more poke on a functional level, but while a -12 or -18 offset would be more functional than the 0 offset I ordered, I think I'll still be able to utilize the ever so slightly wider stance.

That sounds like a good daily driver/weekend off-roader compromise. Can’t wait to see the final result!

You used to be allowed 1/2 inch of tire poke. But always better to have them fully covers. Go to motor vehicle regulations.
