Weekend Wheelin?

Just wondering if anyone would like to plan a trip for this weekend. The wife really wants to go out.... and well so do I! I know my way around Hill 60 pretty good but would like to try something else.
We don't have to do any extreme wheelin but we can if we have some capable rigs.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks and happy new year!

Ah missed this, should plan ahead for another run! Hoping to get some better tires though so people don't have to winch me the whole way through the trail. :)

I also didn’t see this post somehow! Happy new year, VIO :)

I’m down to go out pretty much any weekend. Let’s do it!

You are right on time!, I was referring to next weekend Jan 9 or 10. I've been on nightshift so my sense of time has been a little messed up.

Right on! There is a very slim chance I may have to work this weekend but I am in!
Is there any areas anybody had in mind they have wanted to check out?

Sorry guys something came up and I have to head to the mainland this weekend.

If you want we can plan something for the 23rd or 24th.

Bummer! I'm good for the 23 or 24th as well. But I'm also still free this weekend if others want to go out.

Yeah I'm still good to go this weekend! I've only ever been in the Hill 60 area once briefly, so I wouldn't mind exploring around that area or just Cowichan area in general, but I'm pretty much down for whatever as long as it doesn't involve certain body damage.

Hill 60 is always good, and well used, so most of the trails are wide enough to avoid any damage. There are a few technical\difficult spots, but stock rigs get through just fine with a spotter.

Mt. Sicker is also good fun, but last time I went up there the guy I was with ended up with multiple nails in his tires. People burn pallets out there and leave the nails behind. So I've been avoiding it.

There are also some nice routes around Skutz Falls up to a viewpoint. One part of it is really sketchy up a very steep power line trail, but last time I was there I found a potential bypass to avoid that. So I'd be up for exploring that too. The final stretch to the viewpoint is really difficult too, but we can go as far as we feel comfortable.

Mt Hall is also an option, up to a cool cabin, but we'd probably hit snow. It goes up to 1100m elevation.

I'm up for whatever!

TRD Proser's picture

Jared
Langford

Sweet! Well I don't want nails in my tires, but maybe enough people have already been through since and collected all the nails with their tires?

I'm down with the view point at Skuts Falls too, if you wanna see if there's a way around the super sketch. If not, is there a way to turn around or is it more of a "gotta push through" kinda trail?

Any cool places like camp spots or lakes etc, in the Hill 60 area?

The main attraction at Hill 60 is the river. It's one of the more difficult places to get to, but I did it when my 4runner was stock so I think you'll be fine. And there's a good route that goes to the river, then over to Mt Sicker, so we can do that and just avoid the party spots where we're likely to find nails.

Skutz Falls would be fine too. We can easily turn around at any point. Most of it is just old logging roads and power lines. A few obstacles along the way. They're also logging out that way lately though, so I don't know how it looks right now. Things change fast when they're logging.

I don't think we'll have any snow, but it'll be wet and sloppy. There's a short water\mud crossing to get to the Hill 60 river spot, and I'm not sure what it'll look like this time of year.

I've done both trips multiple times, so I have no preference either way!

ok sweet, then maybe lets do the Hill 60 river to Mt Sicker route, if that sounds good to you unless you want to explore somewhere new, I'm good with that too.

Let's do it! Which day is better? Sunday is better for me, but I can do either.

I prefer Saturdays but I'm fine with Sunday if that works better for you

Saturday's fine for me! But let's wait and see if anyone else is coming, and if they have a preference.

We had a good run yesterday! Got in a few solid hours of wheeling, and got down the river spot for lunch. The day was cut a bit short when Seth got a branch stuck in his tire bead, and we couldn't get it to re-seat with the limited tools we had on the trail.

I didn't get many pics or videos, but here's the few I captured.

Yeah it was fun! I still feel really bad for Seth. Always a bit un-nerving to have something happen to a tire, thank god he had a spare.

Did everyone make it home safe?

We've GOT to do that again as soon as possible, and bring our new member Dave with us!

BTW, got home, started unloading my gear and noticed the cargo tray in my trunk was soaked! Checked under the cargo tray, it was wet too! I can't see the huge deep mud puddle being the cause but I can't think of what else would've caused it. No clue how water would've gotten back there.

Anyways, glad to meet Seth and Eric, good dudes!

Damn! I don’t know about the 5th gens, but I know the 3rd gens have a vent in the rear drivers side wheel well that’s supposed to release air pressure from the cabin when you slam the doors closed. That vent could definitely allow water in, and it would end up in the rear truck area.

You weren’t in the water that long, but I guess a big splash of it could have forced its way in. Good thing you found it before it caused any issues.

Well, it was a day, a great run detailed by some technical problems. Can't thank Jared, Alex, and Erik enough for trying to troubleshoot the tire and my waterlogged air filter. Great group on this forum, and even though we were stopped by some hiccups, we have reason to get back out there.

Here are some pictures from the day, in no particular order. I'll upload my videos to my VIO Moose YouTube account.

Jared, maybe double check all your seals to see if they're all good too.

TRD Proser's picture

Awesome pictures Seth!

I think I figured out what the cause of the water was...remember all the trash we picked up? Well the trash bag we used had a bunch of holes in it from the sharp plastic object we threw in at the beginning.

The water from the cans and trash dripped through the holes and onto the cargo tray and underneath it... gross.

Anyways, at least I know there isn't any leaks or broken seals.

iruninca's picture

Alex
Duncan

Nasty! But you're right, that's better than a leak in your truck. I'm going to make a habit of bringing a trash bag every time I go out, and filling it up with other people's garbage. We can't pick it all up, but if everyone picked up one bag, we could make a dent.

Canuck120's picture

Ewwwww. Lol Glad you figured out the leak and a big kudos to you all for hauling out some trash!
I will start doing the same as well for sure.

Cheers!

That's crazy, the price you paid for picking up other people's crap!

Good idea to bring extra bags, maybe the heavy duty kind or a cheap camping bag.

Sweet photos!

I’m heading up to Mount Cain (Feb 11th-13th) for snow boarding and wheeling around my familiar area of the back woods up there. I'll be camping in the mountain somewhere for my 2 nights out.

I'll be coming from comox and going back to gold river Saturday evening on the back road.

Anyone coming out this way?

Hey folks!
Anyone been up to wolf lake recently? Wondering if there are any gates and how the snow line is. Are there any gnarly spots? Never been up. Thanks in advance!
